Wednesday Pub Night #110 - 8:00 at Flannery's

Greetings to all:

Since our organizer, Stuart, is travelling up the New England coast under sail, with stops at several brewpubs by night, I am left to select the locale for this, the 110th PubNight. In a change from some of the hip lounges we've hit lately - damn cool, though they all were - I've chosen a simple Irish pub I've been walking by for 5 years but have never stepped inside.

Flannery's

205 W. 14th Street, At Seventh Avenue
Starting at 8:00pm
No food, so eat first.

DIRECTIONS:
1, 2, 3, 9 at 14th St is 20 feet from the pub
A, C, E, and L at 14th St. & 8th is one block west
PATH is one block east at 6th Ave.
4,5,6, N, R are 3 blocks east at Union Square

DESCRIPTION:
"Flannery's is a neighborhood Irish bar on the edge of Chelsea. Its soft wood and lighting are a fave with people who work in the neighborhood. Too far uptown to draw West Villagers and not nearly chic enough for Chelsea, Flannery's is the working man's living room pub on 14th and Eighth."--Kerry Burke, citysearch.com

"A perfect example of why the term "Irish pub" has become synonymous with "ordinary." It's somewhat dingy, and you probably wouldn't make plans to go to Flannery's unless you had a craving for darts. (Rock bands Fridays and Saturdays, no cover.)" &emdash; The New York Bar Guide, sidewalk.com

REASONS TO CELEBRATE JUNE 17th, 1998:

  1. Leigh Anne's Birthday. Even though she only attended her 1st PubNight last week, she would like to have a few beers among the PubNight crew.
  2. Raise a toast to Captain Dan and Crew Stuart. The Piltch brothers are braving the flooding rains and tree-downing lightning to bring Christina, a beautiful 50 year old (wooden sailboat), up north to her summer home in Maine.
  3. On this day in 1941, WNBT-TV -Channel 4 in New York City, was granted the first construction permit to operate a commercial TV station in the United States. All hail television!
  4. 1928 -The first woman to successfully fly across the Atlantic Ocean did so this day. She was celebrated as the greatest aviatrix of the time. Her name was Amelia Earhart.
  5. 1972 -Newspapers around the country, including "The Washington Post", reported a burglary this day on the 6th floor of a plush Washington, DC apartment and office complex called The Watergate. The story took up nothing more than a couple of inches of copy, buried inside the paper and out of sight of the day's top news stories, but ultimately resulted in the resignation of then President Nixon. (Keep in mind, though, that Nixon wasn't all bad; he signed the legislation creating EPA.)
  6. 1985 -Judy Norton-Taylor, who played the role of Mary Ellen on "The Waltons", saw her good girl image tarnished as she was photographed nude for "Playboy" magazine.

FAMOUS BIRTHDAYS TODAY:
1882 -Igor Fedorovich Stravinsky [composer]
1917 -Dean Martin (Dino Crocetti) [cheezy, yet multi-faceted, performer]
1946 -Barry Manilow (Barry Alan Pincus) [the reason soft-rock radio was invented]
1951 -Joe Piscopo [comedian]

Hope to see you tonight, Wed. June 17 at 8 pm at Flannery's.
