Wednesday Pub Night #185 - 8:00 pm at Ace Bar
Back to the Pub Night home page
For this week's PubNight, we are celebrating the annual migration of Kris Pennella to a new job. She left TheStreet.Com after a lengthy tenure of 348 days to move on to more interesting, and hopefully lucrative, "options." As such, Kris declared that she wants to "party like a rock star" this week. Strong words for most of us, but she may be up to the task.
As Kris' choice, we return to a favorite of many long-time veteran PubNighters, Ace Bar at 531 East 5th Street between A and B. Petro likes the lunch box collection, TK likes the pool table, Kris likes the pinball machines, Madrid likes the young goth boys, and for the rest there are also dart boards and thirteen beers on tap. Dinner first at Stingy Lulu's (cheap diner food) on St. Mark's between 1st and A.
Our last trip to Ace Bar was PubNight 16 on 7/17/96, 3 weeks before Kris first joined us. Of the ten people at that PubNight, only two of us are still at the same jobs.

Today in PubNight-related history:
- 1994 - Apple unveils digital camera - On this day in 1994, Apple (former employer to several PubNighters, and current employer to one occasional member) announced a digital color camera that could download images directly to computers. (I think we might be familiar with this concept.) Previous electronic cameras had not caught on because of their poor image quality and high price. Apple's Quick Take sold for slightly less than average and delivered a higher image quality. Digital imagery would become increasingly important over the next two years, as the Web, only recently available to consumers, became a significant communications medium (and a backbone to PubNight.)
- 1880 - First mechanical engineering society meets - Engineers from eight states founded the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (Petro is a member) on February 16, 1880. The group met in New York City and elected Robert Henry Thurston as its first president. Thurston had established an engineering school at the new Stevens Institute of Technology (whose alumni include Petro, Jay, and Greg) in New Jersey and would later create an engineering school at Cornell (which Stuart attended.)
See you tonight.
Jay, Kris, and Petro
