Wednesday Pub Night #224 (11/15/00) - 8 pm at The Gaf Bar

Back to the Pub Night home page

Hey there,

It's that time of year again: Greg takes over Pub Night for a week and gets a rare opportunity to have people listen to his entertainment suggestions. For my birthday (which is actually on Thursday), this time I wanted to pick a place I felt I'd fit in, a place where the socially challenged can keep themselves busy without needing to talk to anyone. A suggestion from occasional Pub Nighter Andrea seemed ideal: why not go somewhere with a bar bowling game! Those who felt last months trip to Bowlmor was a cool concept but was just too damn physically demanding should be equally pleased.

Our destination for the week is The Gaf Bar. No, it's not devoted to set lighting; "Gaf" is apparently an Irish slang term for a place to hang out, which seems eminently appropriate. There are two Gaf's in Manhattan. Of the other one on the Upper East Side, Digital City says they embrace their Irish heritage like so: "women have been known to take off their bras and hang them over the bar in accordance with tradition." That sounds like so much fun that I make the following offer: I will pick up drinks for the night for any woman attendee who removes the bra they are wearing when they enter the place and puts it over the bar. Note that this only applies to the alcohol consumed after said removal, not to any courage inducing shots done earlier in the night.

Where: The Gaf Bar
Time: 8pm (no food)
Address: West 48th street between 9th and 10th avenues
Backup: O'Flaherty's, 46th between 8th and 9th

What, you wanted an exact address or something? Everybody's gotten so spoiled lately with all these fancy URLs leading to bar maps and subway directions. Bah, who needs 'em? (grumpy old man mode) In my day we were lucky if we even knew for sure where the bar was on Wednesday night! (/gomm)

As for reasons to head out, did I mention the bowling games? I'll avoid the usual comments about who else was born on this date, as it will just get Petro excited about Lisa Bonet again. Which reminds me: High Fidelity is out on DVD now, and my turntable should be working again this weekend (as if you cared).

Hope to see you tomorrow night,
--Greg
