PubNight #264 (09/05/01) - 7:30 at Riviera Sports Cafe and Bar

Back to the Pub Night home page

Greetings.

We hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and didn't get too much of a sunburn or hangover.

This week we are going to a bar that has been the backup for a number of previous weeks in the West Village but has yet to be a primary destination, Riviera Café and Sports Bar in Sheridan Square. They have food and a few of the TVs will likely be showing the U.S. Open. I've spotted former Mayor Koch brunching there on several occasions, so we'll trust his judgement on the food.

Why a sports bar? I had no other places in mind when I read that two big sports events happened on September 5th. One hundred years ago this Wednesday (September 5, 1901) the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues was formed in Chicago, becoming the first organized baseball league. For football fans, five years to the day later (9/5/06), Bradbury Robinson executed the first legal forward pass in football, throwing the ball to Jack Schneider of St. Louis University in a game against Carroll College. So a sports bar seemed logical.

Riviera is convenient to the 1/9 at Christopher St., the A/C/E/F and orange S at West 4th St, and the 2/3 at 14th St.

See you at PubNight.
