PubNight #273 (11/14/01) - 7:30 pm at Firehouse

This week, Harry Potter mania is sweeping the country. Harry Potter: The Books. Harry Potter: The Video Game. Harry Potter: The Legos (Harry is frightening with a big, round, yellow head--see http://www.fronskiefeint.com/legos.html). Harry Potter: The Toilet Paper. And, finally, this Friday, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, appearing in theaters filled with screaming kids everywhere. Why, it's enough to choke a hogwart.

Originally titled "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" in its UK release, both book and movie were retitled for this country because people in the US have been taught by our public school system that books about or by philosophers suck ass. Frankly, all this focus on young Mr. Potter has got me ticked off, because it's distracting everyone from the real reason to celebrate this November 16th: my becoming the latest Pubnighter to roll over their odometer and turn 30 on that date, which is why I get to write the e-mail this week.

I've taken inspiration from the books and film, combined it with a style introduced by Petro recently, and present to you "Pubnighters as Harry Potter Characters".

Wait, I was supposed to mention going to bar somewhere in here. This week, we return to Firehouse on the Upper West Side, which we haven't been to since Pubnight #82 almost exactly four years ago. The part I remember from that visit was some sad news: the paint roller candy Melissa Bornmann had been bringing to Pub Night the previous few weeks had been discontinued, and the stock was out, so the box she arrived with was the last of it. Perhaps the worst thing ever to be made out of sugar, the roller pops were awful in that way that makes you grab your friends and say "this is disgusting, here, try it". Forced to take home the leftovers at the end of the night, I continued to dole them out perodically in surprise visits for almost two years before our private stock finally ran out. Or did it? (cue ominous horror-movie sequel music here)

No, really, they're all gone, so the main thing you have to look forward to eat at Firehouse are the wings, along with all the usual bar food suspects:

Also born this week in November, 1971, was the very first microprocessor: the Intel 4004. Coincidence? I think not. Had my own growth followed Moore's law the same way computing power has since that week, I would currently be 165 miles tall.

Today in NYC history - "On November 13th, Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his place of residence. That request came from his wife." Oscar and Felix lived at Park & 87th or CPW & 74th, depending on the episode. Petro claims the show was loaded with inconsistencies like that. http://www.timvp.com/oddcoupl.html lets you hear that opening dialog, the theme song, and similar bits of Odd-ness. Deep down, he knew she was right.

Meanwhile, Firehouse hasn't been in the public eye since their last hit "Love of a Lifetime" peaked on the charts in the summer of 1991, but I hear they're planning a reunion tour on a double bill with Anthrax this winter.
