PubNight #412 (8/11/04) - 7:30pm at Peculier Pub

Previous PubNights PubNight Home

To take a page from Tennyson, in the late summer, a young pubnighter's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of half-empty NYU bars. That's right -- it's time to visit a couple of those places that we'll never, ever get to go to once the undergraduate infestation resumes.

And what better place to start than Peculier Pub, last visited for PubNight #57 in 1997? This bar has been so described: "a small, dank hole in the ground, a pit where one can crawl off to at the end of a day and drink to 'get rid of the pain of being a man.' It is warm, dark, and smells of something not quite dead." For good measure, its waitresses have been called "vengeful and moody." All of this is rather beside the point, though, as it has a lovely and very large beer menu, a good jukebox and decent cheap bar food. I like it enough that I'll probably attend even though I'm currently feverish with flu and intermittently having hallucinations. For what are hallucinations, anyway, but free entertainment?

Peculier Pub is also is the setting of and inspiration for the webcomic "Goats" (http://www.goats.com). I recommend reading the Jeopardy! series (http://www.goats.com/archive/990726.html) for a little taste. Man, if Ken Jennings were only so interesting. Some might be interested in the Goats Litany of Beer: "i must drink beer. beer is the mind-killer beer is the little death that brings total obliteration i will face my beer i will permit it to pass over me and through me and when it has gone past i will turn the inner eye to see its path when the beer has gone there will be nothing. only i will remain." Yes, I ordered the t-shirt.

See you there!
