Hiya -

Well, this week's PNNY choice was selected for one overwhelming, indisputable, highly respectable (at least according to the Triumvirate Collective) reason: money. And how to best stretch said legal tender to a degree proportionate to Plastic Man's arms on a kite-flying day.

The namesake of this week's pub selection would highly agree with our monetary motivations, Mr. Boss Tweed, who went on to die in jail and is best known for corruptly redirecting funds from post-Civil War New York City to line his pockets and believe it or not, made sure that The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History were chartered on his watch. There is good and bad in everyone, I suppose.

Boss Tweed's (formerly Smithfields-last visited on 04/03/02 PN #293) repays the debt of Mr. Tweed's notorious reputation to the city of New York in a most wonderful way: by offering arguably some of the best drink prices in the Lower East Side, Mr. Tweed's old stomping grounds.

For those who won't bother visiting the website, check out this out- LADIES: all well drinks $2 until midnight. EVERYONE: $2 Bud & Budlight drafts- $8 for a pitcher; $2 Rheingolds; $3 well drinks til 10 p.m.; $2 well drinks from 10-11pm.

The staff is super friendly and the backyard seating area is great for a group our size (in case the light entertainment gets a little too loud or obnoxious). If it rains, we can gather under the outdoor canopy or employ Tweedian tactics and threaten the use of mob rule to stifle whatever music doesn't agree with our holier-than-thou ears. And if that doesn't work, there's always the backup.

So let's give Tweeds a try. There's even a pool table and darts if you're not in the I-want-to-drown-myself-in-heady-conversation mood. The bar also offers a free drink to whoever figures out a 19th century tavern puzzle.

See ya there!
