PubNight #570 (8/22/07) - Peculier Pub

Previous PubNights PubNight Home

Ah, the end of summer is a bittersweet time, is it not? As we prepare to go back to school (wait, we're not in school anymore), dread the departure of green from the trees (no, hold on, the autumn colors are prettier, and it's not like we have trees here anyway), don extra sweaters to chase away the cool night air (and turn off the damn A/C at last)....

Forget that lede. Summer is ending: sweet.

There's one unqualified negative, sadly. The college kids will soon be back in town, and while there was a time when we were young and spry enough to bed them, now their principal impact on our lives is that they compete with us for space at some of the best local watering holes. Well, we're taking one last stab at an NYU place for the year: Peculier Pub, that dank hole of the cheap eats and many beers.

Along will come winter, the feast of the stranger,
The beasts in the manger will fall on their knees.
Green in the cloister, green on the altar,
A promise that green will return to the trees.

--Anthony Burgess, from "Autumn Carol" from the musical Cyrano

See you there!
