Birthdays.

This email has some brief factoids to follow, with a strong Phelpian finish. It is thought the large-scale celebration of birthdays in Europe began with the pagan cult of Mithras, which originated in Persia, and was spread by soldiers throughout the Roman Empire.

Such celebrations were uncommon previously, so practices from other contexts such as the Roman festival, the Saturnalia, were adapted for birthdays. It was marked by tomfoolery and reversal of social roles, in which slaves and masters ostensibly switched places.

It is on this last note from an otherwise bland wikipedia entry that I address the celebration of Beth's birthday.

If there ever was one chick who can monopolize upon a master and slave switch— Pastrypunk is the hotels-on-Park Place-AND-Boardwalk tycoon. Therefore, I conclude, that the Saturnalia and whole reasoning behind birthdays was divinely ordered by the god Saturn (Cronus, if you're Greek) for Beth. Especially for her oh my great god, "she's forty," extravaganza that begins on Wednesday-- and will go on for weeks!

If anyone can find fault with my reasoning, then fine, let's argue the finer points at the Frying Pan on Wednesday. Otherwise, I hereby declare, let the games begin. Oh, and be won, and be won, and be won, and be won, and be won, and be won, and be won, and be won.
