Dear friends and drinking acquaintances,
After brainstorming PubNight ideas yesterday, I produced a short list full of sleek wine bars and chi chi cocktail lounges. But inspiration is a fickle muse! When I sat down tonight to make a final decision, I did a total 180 and chose a cheap and somewhat grungy dive bar with an extended happy hour featuring 2-for-1 specials.
A random Yelp.com reviewer describes Double Down Saloon as "a totally punk bar with cool bartenders and WEIRD TV SCREEN SHOWS." How have we not had PubNight here before? Maybe it's a little cheesy, trying a little too hard to be a dive, but how can we not have a good time when we can order drinks with PN in-joke names like Bacon Martini and Ass Juice -- which NY Magazine says tastes "like a slightly bitter Hurricane."
Downsides mentioned in Yelp reviews include 'too big, I like my dive bars small' and 'empty on a Thursday night'. There is outdoor space, and a pool table, too. Sounds great for our big ole group. But hit the ATM before you arrive, it's cash only.
So come on out, let loose, and celebrate the middle of the week with Pubnight!
