Drink with me
To days gone by
To the life that used to be
Let the wine of friendship never run dry
So says Les Miserables, the musical, and it is, perhaps, an appropriate sentiment after 15 years of Wednesday nights, as we look forward to many more. But unlike Les Miserables, we can raise our glasses without having endured a prison term for stealing bread, the wretched misery, or a revolution. Talkin' 'bout a revolution, did you know that the guy who signed Tracy Chapman to her first paid gig has attended PubNight? True story.
But this week's selection is not about the French or revolution (or folk singers.) It's about the Irish and hookers. But not that kind of hooker (you filthy pervert.) Or that kind of hooker either (you filthy rugby supporter.) A Galway Hooker is a type of sailboat, so they claim. And it's a bar in midtown that PubNight has not yet visited.
Maybe I shouldn't have written this email while watching the PBS airing of the 25th anniversary performance of Les Miz. But it did make me think back through 15 years of this little thing of ours.
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted
Not really true for me. But maybe in my revisionist autobiography. And I'm still working on the wine part.
The point being: drink with me!
