PubNight #827 (8/1/12) - Riviera Café and Sports Bar

Previous PubNights PubNight Home

This week's email come from Petro! And since I'm here, I will add the editorial note that it's my birthday Pubnight next week, on my actual birthday. Yay!

This week we head to the heart of The Village, Sheridan Square. Who was Sheridan and why does he warrant our drinking beside his namesake park on this day? Why is this night different from all other nights? Oops, the latter question might be 8 months early and the wrong context. According to the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, "On this day, August 1, in the year 1864 during the Civil War, General Philip Sheridan was appointed by Ulysses S. Grant as commander of the Army of the Shenandoah, where he defeated Confederate troops. Sheridan further gained fame when his tactics helped to force General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox. He was instrumental in the official designation of Yellowstone as a National Park and, in 1888, his career reached its apex when he was appointed General of the Army by President Cleveland."

Despite its central location – the sports bar, not Appomattox -- we were there only once, PubNight #264 on 09/05/01, when PubNight was 5-1/2, and some of you not much older.

Also today (August 1) in history (I suggest a shot per listed event):

Since some of you might want to catch Olympic updates, a sports bar seemed appropriate. Please note that it's a Red Sox bar, so be sure to raise a loud and visible toast to Bucky Dent (http://www.baseball-almanac.com/box-scores/boxscore.php?boxid=197810020BOS)

That's all I got.

- Petro, signing in for August
