Time for a brief history lesson.
England's Royal Navy kept its sailors happy with alcohol for centuries. Originally, a daily ration of a gallon of beer was handed out to each sailor. For storage purposes this was soon replaced by a measure of brandy, later a half pint of rum... which then was further watered down, and over the next decades reduced to a quarter cup of booze per day.
This horror show of sobriety culminated on July 31, 1970 - a dark day in the history of liquor: the last time when England's navy issued its sailors their daily tot.
Ever since I heard of this, I've wanted to celebrate Black Tot Day in style, with Pubnight. And this year, I'm doing so, albeit a day early!
While many other locations called to me, after hours of deliberation and research, I've decided to drink my rum at Otto's Shrunken Head, visited by Pubnight only twice over the years.
See you there!
