Back to the Pub Night home page
Where:
Time: I*ll be there by 7.
The pub has a pool table and dart board, 14 bottled beers, 10 tap beers, cider, and good pub food (fish & chips and BBQ pork are recommended.)
Transportation: It is about 40 yards from the Chambers Street Station on the 1/2/3/9, 1 block and 40 yards from the Chambers St Station on the A/C/E, 2 blocks from the City Hall Station on the N/R, and about 3 blocks from the Brooklyn Bridge Station on the 4/5/6 and Chambers Street Station on the J/M/Z.
History: Katie O'Tooles dated back to the 1880's. The structure was there well before Katie's opened their tavern on the ground floor. Living "uptown" around Chambers Street was for the more disreputable folks. Most prostitution houses and the jail were near where City Hall is now. Additionally, taverns near the water with outside tables were temporary office space for captains who needed to closely monitor the loading/off loading of cargo. For these reasons, the previous tavern had among its regular customers Morgan the Pirate, who only lived a few blocks away. (History courtesy of Rob Ferri, EPA employee and former NYC Park Ranger)
Reasons to celebrate this week: Over 150 people attended PubNights and there are no birthdays this week?! Here are some other reasons to celebrate.
-- Monday 6/23 --
- June 23, 1860 - U.S. Secret Service created by an act of Congress to protect against counterfeiting of U.S. Currency. They begin protecting the President after Pres. William McKinley is assassinated in 1901. (The official Secret Service homepage is lame; instead check out: http://cpsr.org/cpsr/computer_crime/cu_digest_4.57_2600_raid.txt)
- June 23, 1973 - The U.S. Army calls Dwight Elliott Stone to tell him that he is the last person drafted into the U.S Armed Forces prior to expiration of the Selective Service Act.
-- Tuesday 6/24 --
- June 24, 1972 - Helen Reddy*s *I Am Woman* released by Capitol Records 25 years ago today. Soon after, this song becomes a favorite of my Mother and many of yours; we probably still have the 8-track tape (http://www.bway.net/~abbot/8track/history.html) On the same day, Bernice Gera became the first woman to umpire a professional baseball game. She called balls and strikes for the first game of a Class A doubleheader. Due to extremely bad treatment by players and fans, she resigned between games.
-- Wednesday 6/25 --
- June 25, 1949 - Jimmy *JJ* Walker, later of *Good Times* (Dy-no-mite!) fame was born on this day. That makes JJ 48 years old! (http://www.amdest.com/stars/jjwalker.html)
- June 25, 1951 - In an event later crucial to Gen X development, the first commercial color television program was aired by CBS. It was seen by very few people in the new format because color televisions were not yet available to the public, and even CBS only had about 3 dozen color TVs.
--Thursday 6/26 --
- June 26, 1946 - The first *two piece brief swimsuit*, a.k.a. bikini, is shown to the press for the first time.
- June 26, 1985 - After a questionable call by the umpire against the home team, the organist at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater, FL, home of a Phila. Phillies class A baseball team, plays *3 Blind Mice.* He immediately becomes the first and possibly only stadium organist ever ejected from a professional baseball game. In a related note, the Eastchester High School Marching Band, of which Stuart and I were members, once got our football team a 10 yard penalty for repeatedly playing too loud after warning by the ref.
...and the last, but far from least important, reason to celebrate...
- June 26, 1943 - Birthday of Rico Petrocelli, known to his Boston Red Sox teammates and fans as *Petro*. He played his entire career with the BoSox, playing shortstop from 1965-69 and third base from 1969-76. He is currently coach of a BoSox minor league team. Until last season he also did Sox play-by-play. However, the station fired him after he threw a pie in the face of a station news anchor during a live on-air prank. Come celebrate or mourn - your choice - Stuart being out of town and, therefore, not being able to attend PubNight.
Siblings, coworkers, PT classmates, friends, loved ones, and potential future loved ones are welcome to join us.
See you Wednesday evening at Mitch's Place in historic Tribeca.
- Petro - (or Steven to my coworkers)
